It’s listed as a “desktop” charger, but it’s still more portable than a standard MacBook Pro charger plus sundry phone and gadget chargers carried together. This would combine the best of both worlds and give you the archive on a drive that's protected against hardware failure. As an added security against such hardware failures, you can set up a mirrored RAID volume of two or more drives, and use that as your Time Machine volume. If the time machine volume goes down then there's nothing that time machine can do to get it back up and running. As an archive tool, Time Machine only uses whatever volumes are available (RAIDed disks or standalone disks, thumb drives, network shares, etc - anything that's HFS+ formatted) and creates a database of hard and soft links with timestamps associated with them so it can manage file changes. Time Machine does not safeguard against hardware failures like this. They mirror and stripe many drives together to get the optimal performance and stability that RAID can offer.
If one drive goes down on a mirrored RAID array, then the data is immediately still accessible.

That configuration is a defense against a hardware failure, not a software failure or user mishap. Time machine is a manageable archive (you can browse it and select specific files to restore), and while RAID can mirror two drives, like folks have mentioned above it is more of a solution in case one drive fails. RAID can configure disks to give better performance, or better stability, or larger storage space than just one drive alone, but it does not serve as a true "backup". Furthermore, Time Machine lets you 'undelete' files better than a RAID1 mirror drive can since if you delete a file on a MIRROR drive you'll delete it from both physical drives simultaneously.

So while the RAID1 ensures no data is lost at all (compared to a Time Machine backup that could lose up to a full hour's worth of work), the Time Machine backup also has the added value of maintaining iterations of changes in case a file itself is corrupted where you can then restore the file to various points back in time before it was corrupted.
